Ocean Reflections: One writer's journey to lose and to find herself in a place called Zihuatanejo.

Updated: Aug 29

As the sun sets over the horizon on the Pacific ocean, I find endless inspiration in the rhythm of the waves and the vibrant culture that is Zihuatanejo, Mexico.

This idyllic setting is the backdrop for my bittersweet story that delves into my writer's journey in this captivating, diverse community along Mexico's "Costa Grande."

Through "The Zihua Diaries," readers are taken on a compelling narrative that combines personal reflections with a deep commitment to the community. My 25 years of advocacy and engagement with children, indigenous families, fundraising efforts, and dedication to education shine through the pages, offering a glimpse into a world where culture, challenges for social change and inclusion, creativity and altruism intersect.

One of the central themes of this memoir is the profound impact the ocean has on the my life and my storytelling. My repeated travels and writings from the New England Atlantic coast of Massachusetts and Maine and from the Pacific Northwest to southern Pacific coastal Zihuatanejo ultimately reveal how obstacles and truths in my own life experiences are reflected in the lives and landscapes of the Mexican people and places I encounter.

The vast expanses, currents and tides of the ocean serve as a metaphor for endless possibilities and untapped potential. The unexpected experiences of going inside the lives, communities and classrooms of indigenous and at-risk children alongside pioneering Nahuat educator Marina Sanchez Hernandez changed me from tourist to activist in ways only destiny could design.

"The Zihua Diaries" is a visual and narrative feast for the senses, blending contemporary and ancient Latin American influences with the bittersweet realities of life in modern Mexico and the North American continent.

Please visit THE ZIHUA DIARIES website again to explore upcoming writing and cultural events, the forthcoming book, my writer's bio, details about the children's lives, and ways to get involved in the charitable initiatives of LIBROS PARA NINOS-ZIH.

THIS IS A STORY THAT WILL INSPIRE CHANGEMAKERS OF ALL AGES.

It is my greatest hope that this project speaks not only to literary agents and publishers seeking fresh, inspirational stories but also to Hollywood and cinematic producers looking for compelling narratives to bring to the screen.

Readers of THE ZIHUA DIARIES span various age groups, and include travelers seeking a taste of Mexico's hidden gems, expats longing for a piece of home and fellow change makers, literacy advocates, writers and educators in search of inspiration.

By weaving together elements of Mexico's natural beauty, truths of its local and international community, indigenous culture, and experiences of personal growth, THE ZIHUA DIARIES delivers vivid reminders of the transformative powers of place and storytelling.

It is my most sincere to inspire others in their own creative and life journeys with a testament that making a difference in the lives of others will not only change themselves, but our world.
